UPDATE: Convicted child neglect grandmother sent to prison for 10 years

A judge in Carter County has sentenced a grandmother convicted of not protecting her grandson from his abusive mother to 10 years in prison.

Cheryl A. Hawkes was charged with aggravated child neglect by prosecutors who said Hawkes failed to stop her daughter Christinia Niles from abuse like breaking his skull and burning his hand and feet.

Niles is serving a 10-year sentence.
