TVA School Uplift program awards local schools

Johnson County’s Laurel Elementary School was awarded a $200,000 Building Energy Upgrade and a $10,000 Learning Environment grant through Tennessee Valley Authority’s School Uplift program. School officials and Mountain Electric Cooperative announced the funding Tuesday. The TVA’s School Uplift program awards schools for improving their energy management. School leaders say the grant funding will be used to upgrade the building’s HVAC systems and buy a new piece of playground equipment. The school has around 90 students in pre-K through 6th grade. In addition to Laurel Elementary winning a grand prize grant, Doe Elementary School in Johnson County won a $10,000 grant to improve its learning environment and Towne Acres Elementary in Johnson City was also awarded a School Uplift Grant.
