‘Surprising’: Bristol leaders receive full payment for outstanding tax debt by Chinese company

The Chinese company that owed the City of Bristol, Virginia $600,000 in back taxes paid off the debt a day after court papers were filed by the city to take back the former campus of Virginia Intermont College.
Bristol leaders called the payment surprising but said they will continue to press US Magis International on maintaining their property—something that had not been done in several years as some buildings fell into disrepair, leading to a destructive fire at one of the main buildings in December.
Virginia Intermont closed its doors in 2014 after losing accreditation and continuing financial problems that left professors without paychecks in some months.
