Rezoning for potential cryptocurrency mine in Mountain City fails to pass

A proposed Bitcoin mine that would have required a rezoning to be able to operate has been voted down for now after the Mountain City Board of Mayor and Aldermen failed to approve that rezoning Tuesday night. No motion was made to approve the second and final reading of an ordinance that would have zoned property just off Highway 421 that would have allowed for Bitcoin miner CleanSpark to build a 30 megawatt facility on Rainbow Road. The proposal drew public opposition from the time it was announced months ago. CleanSpark could still seek a location outside the Mountain City limits in Johnson County. Currently, the county does not have any zoning laws but has been considering action that could place some restrictions on data centers and cryptocurrency miners.
