KCS release results of first year of random drug tests

Kingsport City Schools’ first year of random student drug testing found seven students who tested positive for drug use. School system leaders say the new program has been successful in raising awareness about student health. The program tested about 140 students who participate in athletics or extracurricular activities. Officials say a big problem is vaping, including THC and nicotine, during the school day. Vape detectors have been implemented in all the bathrooms at Dobyns Bennett High School, which school leaders say, generate approximately 60 alerts per day. The school board has already approved the same testing system for the upcoming school year.
