JC Police officer named “Officer of the Year” for actions during Helene

The Johnson City Police Department has announced that Officer Sharrell Dykes was named the 2024-2025 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the American Legion Department of Tennessee in recognition of his bravery and selfless service during Hurricane Helene. The award was presented during a ceremony earlier this month in Murfreesboro. The American Legion Department of Tennessee is comprised of about 155 local posts, all of which can nominate a local law enforcement officer. American Legion Kings Mountain Post 24 nominated Officer Dykes. Officer Dykes retrieved and used a special 5 ton military truck that department had and used it to rescue Eight Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies and a K9 that were trapped by flooding in the Embreeville area.
