JC leaders want Buffalo Mtn designated official “Tennessee Natural Area”

Johnson City leaders traveled to Nashville in July to discuss designating Buffalo Mountain as a Tennessee Natural Area. Buffalo Mountain is maintained by the city’s parks and recreation department. City leaders met with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation and asked that the land be designated a state natural area. The designation would mean a partnership with the state that could include a park ranger, more programs and amenities and a way to preserve the land. The designation would not mean the area is a full-fledged state park, but it would add it’s acreage to the state park system. Johnson City leaders are scheduled to meet with TDEC officials in Johnson City Friday to continue the designation process.
