Game officials in Virginia want deer population reduced to maintain balance in nature
A balance between population and preservation is what Virginia game officials are trying to achieve during deer hunting season.
A new census taken by the Department of Wildlife Resources shows 10 counties below the Roanoke area, including Tazewell, Washington and Smyth, are being designated for double doe days through December for harvesting on private property.
The report says thinning out the population of mother deer can prevent a population growth that could damage crops, spread disease and cause auto crashes. Does accounted for more than 40 percent of deer harvested in Virginia last year.
