High school football program at Galax High School shut down for remainder of season

Two years removed from a VHSL state championship, the Maroon Tide football program of Galax High School has been shut down for the remainder of the season.
A statement from Assistant Superintendent Charles Byrd said mounting injuries and low participation numbers has compromised the team’s ability to safely compete.
He also said plans were being made to next year’s football schedule to allow the Tide’s players to competitively practice and play. Byrd complemented parents and fans for their support and the hard work of players and coaches this fall.
