Sullivan County proposing tax rate hike

Sullivan County is proposing a tax rate of $1.70, nine cents higher than the certified rate created by the state. Sullivan County Budget Committee officials say two points of focus in the budget are the jail and highway services. Nearly $15 million has been designated to highway funds. Of that, 56.1% will go to highway and bridge maintenance. The jail has been allocated $21.7 million that will mostly go towards jobs and other necessities to open the jail. Commissioners will hold a public session to allow residents to voice their opinions.
